The Icebear guests catched the headlines
"...The team of the private
beach guesthouse The Icebear in Negombo has been busy during a three day bus visit delivering music to the tsunami troubled
South.
They distributed a very special tsunami donation, meant to heal the suffered souls of the youth there and to
re-fill nearly forty new constructed schools with necessary “software” in the cultural field. Forty school principals
received for their grad 9 & 10 students a complete set of six traditional Srilankan drums (Udarata and Phatharata bera),
peaking to a donation total of over five lakh’s.
The action took much attention in some of the Srilankan
newspapers too, praising the assistance of the Island’s tourists as example for the goodness of mankind. Private Secretary
to Minister of Ports & Aviation Mr. Ananda Dharmasiri and others was helpful to provide details; necessary advises as
well as the contacts to the schools mostly in the Galle, Matara and Weligama districts.
The drum donation from
the happily survived Negombo coast was possible with the instant help of The Icebear Hotel guests, friends, clients and relations
from all over the world. Swiss owner Gerd Haisch and Son David explained, that they were able to give a tidy order to master
craftsmen to manufacture the dozens of dozen of drums as donation of the hotel guests, who offered their help spontaneously
after the tsunami, organizing their own collecting, with school children donating their pocket money, companies offering their
annual journey budget, elderly homes offering a part of their small pension, individuals spending the equivalent of their
birthday party.
Cristi Saparamadu, Manager of The Icebear Hotel, Negombo, mentioned that the company’s “Roshan
Memorial Foundation” is mostly engaged in drug-prevention of youth in the area. Treasure is accumulated by a share of
the company’s yearly profit as well as with frequently donations given with affection to Sri Lanka from the hotel guests.
Beside the drum donation The Icebear has been engaged those days after the December 26th tsunami in immediate
relief to the local needs in Negombo, neighbourhood Kudapaduwa..."
